Most people opt to make their own pizza dough as they do not like the taste and feel of the pre-made crusts because they take away the sensation of fully homemade pizzas. When you make your own dough, you can regulate the thickness of it – making it as thick or as thin as you like, the size – where you can make a very large pizza or several small ones, as well as the overall taste and quality of the pizza.

To make basic pizza dough, follow these instructions:

  • Stand 250 ml. of warm water in a bowl and add 1 tea spoon of yeast. Stir until it dissolves completely.
  • Start by adding gradually 500g of sifted flour and stir slowly until it blends with the water.
  • Add more flour until the whole mixture becomes stiff.
  • Spread the flour on a flat non sticky surface.
  • Turn out the kneaded dough onto the floured surface. Knead for 10-15 minutes until the dough becomes more smooth.
  • Grease a bowl with oil and place the dough in the bowl. Turn the dough so that it is oiled evenly.
  • Use cling film and cover the bowl to let the yeast rise. Place it in a warm place and wait for around 45 minutes or until the dough doubles in size.
  • Put the dough back on the floured surface and punch it to get rid of any bubbles.
  • Cut the dough from the middle and allow it to rest for 5 minutes.
  • Roll out the two halves in a circle and make it as thick as you want it to be.
  • Lastly oil a baking sheet or better a pizza pan and place the dough there ready to be baked.

Once you have completed the pizza dough, then it is up to you to decide which ingredients you would like to put on your pizza as toppings. These can range from the basic Pizza Margherita i.e. tomato sauce, mozzarella and oregano to toppings like chicken, bacon, seafood, parma ham, rocket, salami, sausages, corn, peppers, various vegetables and sometimes, even French fries!

When you make your own pizza dough, the overall advantages are that you are not restricted in any way regarding size and thickness. Also, the ingredients are selected by you to make you own homemade delicious pizza to your very own specifications!
